Brenda has been involved in martial arts in varying capacities for over 20 years. She has trained in Shotokan Karate, Taekwondo, and Muay Thai and is also connected to the MMA community. She tried Taiji when she was younger, but because of her background in external styles, Taiji felt too “slow and awkward.” Little did she know then that it was in those uncomfortable and awkward places that she would experience the most growth.

At her former martial arts school, her favorite instructor, cross-training at Daoist Gate, noticed how much she enjoyed Bagua Zhang and suggested she take a class with him there. Again, being more drawn to external styles, she sought out Master Zhou and chose to learn Xingyi Quan. Years into her Xingyi training, she decided to try Taiji again. This time, something clicked. It is a particular case: “When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.”

Brenda continues her studies of Wudang Taiji, Taiji Jian (straight sword), Bagua Zhang, and Xingyi Quan under Master Zhou Xuan Yun, with the humble knowledge that this is a lifelong journey. The lessons have greatly benefited her physically and mentally, and she believes that everyone can find health and peace through training.
